Riverside Casino & Golf Resort has closed temporarily as of Monday, March 16 as a precaution to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

'While there have not been any cases of COVID-19 reported at our resort we are electing to close at 5 p.m. today, March 16 in an abundance of caution,' casino operators wrote on Riverside's website.

A Facebook post says Riverside hopes to reopen March 31.

'We are working to reschedule promotions, concerts and events and will make announcements as we secure dates,' according to the post. 'Please check back regularly for updates.'

The casino and golf resort is located 15 minutes south of Iowa City at 3184 Highway 22 in Riverside.

General Manager Dan Franz said depending on how the situation evolves, the golf course will be prepared to open sometime around April 1.

He said the casino will continuing paying employees.

'Our staff is important to us,' he said. 'We're making sure to take care of them during this time of closure.'

Monday morning, Prairie Meadows in Altoona announced it is also closing. The casino, hotel and racetrack are all closed indefinitely.

'It's day by day for the casinos,' said Wes Ehrecke, Iowa Gaming Association president and CEO. 'All of them have taken extraordinary sanitizing efforts.'
