A strong work ethic and a customer focus is what brought Terry Gobel to Great Northern-Twin Cities some 13 years ago, and it’s what has made him stay. “I’m a lead designer and work with a great group of people who love to solve challenges for our customers. My co-workers are always willing to help, to jump in and figure out those difficult things,” he said. “In addition to working with good people, Great Northern gives you the tools to do the job the best way you can. We have new software, new equipment; we have what we need to do the job right.”
Gobel says the concept of a “shared future” at Great Northern is more than just words. “The company wants you to be successful along with them. They want our clients to be successful. Doing what’s right for the customer is important. We simply don’t say no. We’re going to find a way to figure it out. We always want to meet or exceed our customers’ expectations. “
In her 17 plus years of working at Great Northern Laminations, Angela Zabel has held pretty much every job on the plant floor, and she liked the variety. But then she realized she wanted an even bigger challenge and moved into an account coordinator role in the office. “Great Northern is invested with the people here,” she explains. “You can start. You can work your way up. They made the opportunity for me to transition to new jobs and roles within the company. They are giving me the opportunity to learn new skills and, in turn, they’re getting someone with more skills; building on what you learned in the past. We both benefit.”
Zabel also likes the fact the company regularly shares the big picture with employees; and encourages them to get involved in company committees. “It’s a stable firm that treats employees well. It’s a good place to work. People are good. The company listens and they treat you fairly. Wages and benefits are good. One of the things you quickly realize here is that if you work hard, they will recognize your hard work.”
If there’s one word Zabel would use to describe Great Northern, she says it would be, “Integrity. They stand behind what they say.”
“Wow!” That’s what people usually say to Jack Vanstrom when they hear he’s been with Great Northern for 40 years. But Jack isn’t surprised that he’s been with the company that long. “They make you feel like you are part of a family. They’ll tell you when you’re doing good; they have no problem complimenting you. All of the different jobs I held, there was always a challenge, always something new you could do. They personally helped me evolve into a better a person and a better worker.”
Vanstrom especially appreciates being asked for input on new equipment and processes. “When they are considering putting new equipment in, they actually take some of us out to look at it. They ask what we think about the equipment and take our input into consideration. That means a lot. It’s a good company to work for.”
When a member of the Davis family says “Great Northern is a part of our family,” they mean it. All four members of the family work at Great Northern. Kathy and Jeff Davis have been with the company for 35 years. Kathy is currently an account coordinator and an estimator. Jeff is a machine operator working on the new GGX5. Their son Jacob has been fulltime since 2015 and their daughter Emily works part time at Great Northern while attending college.
Jeff says the company offers what most people look for when making a decision about where to work, which is why he’s pleased his children work at Great Northern. “It’s a good company; a stable and profitable company with good pay, profit sharing, retirement and other benefits.”
Kathy appreciates the opportunities to learn and experience a variety of jobs, saying, “The company has helped me grow as a person and, through the years, I’ve grown professionally as well.” Daughter Emily feels the same way, “I have gained a lot of skills and knowledge that will help in all aspects of my life.”
As for the future, specifically the concept of a shared future, Kathy says it’s more than just corporate talk. “It’s about our future as employees and as a company. If you’re successful, the company is successful and they’ll continue to help you.”
And when it comes to family, Jeff says the Great Northern family of coworkers will always have a place in his heart after so many of them stepped forward to help when a fire destroyed their home three years ago. “People we knew from work, and many that we really didn’t know, immediately came to help us and support us in so many ways during that difficult time. It was really kind of amazing and it meant so much.”
